Grace Wales Bonner is in the news with the launch of her first collection dedicated solely to womenswear. The Thirties is referenced in the overcoat with military gold buttons made in partnership with Saville Row Tailors Anderson and Sheppard. And the glamorous images from the Ebony and Jet covers inspired black and white T-shirt prints as well as handmade fringed macramé dresses.
Grace Wales Bonner’s aesthetic is steeped in cultural luxury that integrates European heritage with an Afro Atlantic spirit. Following her graduation from Central Saint Martins in 2014, she launched her eponymous menswear label and received several prestigious awards including LVMH Young Designer Prize 2016, Winner of British Fashion Council/ Vogue Designer Fashion Fund 2019, and CFDA International Men’s Designer of the Year 2021.

Though the silhouettes are womenswear, the collection borrows Bonner’s menswear aesthetic. The resulting pieces are simple but tough, underpinned by a commitment to craft, attention to detail and rigorous tailoring. Popular looks include the black tuxedo styled without a blouse, pleated pants worn with a leather-trimmed cardigan, peacoat with satin panels on the shoulder and toggle fastenings, leather jacket with a Mongolian shearling collar, and cashmere shift trimmed in nappa leather.

Grace Wales Bonner’s vision for her eponymous fashion brand is deeply rooted in exploring the intersections of cultural identity, history, and fashion. Her work often draws inspiration from her mixed heritage, combining European and Afro-Atlantic influences to create collections that tell stories of diasporic experience and black identity. Wales Bonner’s designs challenge traditional fashion narratives by integrating them with historical references, while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic. Her vision celebrates diversity, not just in representation but in the way she redefines elegance through the lens of multiculturalism.

A key component of Wales Bonner’s vision is her intellectual approach to fashion. She sees her collections as a form of cultural commentary. Her collections incorporate academic research, referencing 19th-century colonial history and African spirituality. This scholarly influence allows her to create collections that are more than clothing—Wales Bonner’s vision is to bridge the gap between fashion and art, making her collections as thought-provoking as they are wearable.
Wales Bonner’s vision extends beyond the runway, as she continues to collaborate with artists, writers, and cultural institutions to elevate fashion to an intellectual and artistic level, fostering a deeper understanding of heritage and identity. Stockists include Dover Street Market International, Net-a-Porter, Mr. Porter, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks 5th Avenue, Nordstrom, Selfridges and Boon the Shop.
