HISTORY

SOKO was founded in 2012 by designers Catherine Wiggins and Sarah Schofield, who sought to aspired a jewellery brand that would celebrate artisanal craftsmanship and empower local artisans in developing economies. The brand’s origins lie in the heart of Kenya’s fashion scene, where local artisans are offered fair wages and opportunities to showcase their skills. By integrating traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics, SOKO began to carve out a niche, bridging cultural gaps while fostering an appreciation for handcrafted excellence.

The brand’s collaboration with celebrities and influencers has introduced its designs to a broader audience, exemplifying the integration of handcrafted fashion into global trends. These collaborations have included capsule collections in sync with the brand’s mission, providing a platform for storytelling and cultural representation.

In 2015, SOKO achieved a major milestone by launching its first collection at a high-profile fashion show in New York, marking its presence on the international stage. The collection, which featured ethically made pieces with eye-catching designs, was well-received, attracting attention from both media and consumers. This critical moment positioned SOKO as a pioneer in the sustainable fashion movement, encapsulating the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly jewellery.

In 2018, SOKO was acquired by a major ethical fashion consortium, expanding its reach and resources. This acquisition  has facilitated the launch of new initiatives aimed at supporting sustainable development goals and promoting the welfare of artisans worldwide. The brand has consistently launched collections that highlight unique artistic expressions, drawing from global cultures and the rich tapestry of traditional craftsmanship. By celebrating diverse cultural heritage through fashion, SOKO fosters a deeper connection between the brand, consumers, and artisan communities.

In recent years, SOKO has gained recognition for its commitment to social and environmental justice. The brand participates in industry initiatives aimed at pushing the boundaries of sustainable jewellery, including partnerships with organisations that advocate for ethical labour prices. Through these contributions, SOKO envisions a future where fashion serves as a force for good, promoting equality and sustainability in every aspect of its operations.

VISION

The founder’s vision for SOKO centres around creating an inclusive platform where artisans can thrive and share their stories through fashion. SOKO aims to empower local craftspeople, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their work while preserving traditional techniques. This vision extends beyond profitability; it is about building a community grounded in respect, diversity, and ethical practices.

Catherine Wiggins and Sarah Schofield envisioned a brand that leads the charge in redefining traditional notions of luxury fashion by combining modern design sensibilities with craftsmanship that respects cultural heritage. SOKO seeks to inspire consumers to make thoughtful purchasing decisions, encouraging them to appreciate the artistry behind each piece while fostering a deeper understanding of the impact of their choices on artisans and the environment.

Ultimately, the founders aim to position SOKO not just as a jewellery brand but as a movement that champions sustainability and ethical practices within the industry.
