Sales in the global luxury industry are projected to grow 1% to 3% annually through 2027, according to a report last month by consulting firm Kearney. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that Printemps New York has opened in the historic landmark building, One Wall Street.

Printemps New York was inaugurated, in the presence of AnnaWintour, Global Editorial Director of Vogue and Chief Content Officer of Condé Nast. The 55,000-square-foot space spans two floors that offer fashion, beauty, hospitality, and cultural experiences. In 2022, Printemps selected Laura Gonzalez to create a ‘Paris meets New York’ twist in the design at Printemps One Wall Street. The award winning Paris-based architect and interior designer is recognised for her sophisticated residential projects and collaborations with luxury brands and hospitality groups worldwide.

“It’s a one of a kind project, it’s a dream project,” says Gonzalez, who won Maison and Objet Designed of the Year Table in 2019 and Elle Decor Interior Designer of the Year in 2022. “We drew inspiration from the heritage of Printemps, but this is New York and New York is very special because there are no boundaries here.”

Printemps New York has integrated fine dining to elevate the retail experience. Maison Passerelle led by acclaimed chef Gregory Gourdet offers a modern interpretation of French classics. Additional culinary concepts include the Café Jalu, the Parisian-inspired raw bar Salon Vert, the Red Room Bar, and the Champagne Bar.

“New York offers a dynamic mix of cultural diversity and global influence, making it the perfect location for our brand’s expansion and the introduction of our new concept,” Printemps CEO Jean-Marc Bellaiche said in a press release. “Printemps New York represents a completely fresh approach—it’s not a department store.”

History Of Printemps

Opening its doors in 1865, in the heart of Paris, Printemps is one of the world’s leading department stores with a total area of 45,000 sq-m dedicated to shopping, dining, and tailor-made services.

Printemps has an interesting history. On 17 February 1864, Jules Jaluzot, head of the silk department at Le Bon Marché, married one of his loyal customers, actress Augustine Figeac. She had a small fortune that allowed them to realise their dream of launching their own department store.

In 1865 Jules and Augustine Jaluzot set up their department store in a district located in the midst of a construction project: the Boulevard Haussmann had just been drilled, the Opéra had barely begun and the neighbourhood of the Saint-Lazare train station was considered dusty and dangerous. It was a gamble that justifies the choice of a name full of poetry and hope: “Au Printemps”.

Printemps is considered as the prototype of a modern department store, due to its drive for innovation. As an example, It is the first public building in Paris to be lit entirely by electricity. Although men’s department stores appeared as early as 1878, they were frequented by their wives. In 1925, Printemps dedicated an entire building to gentlemen.

Printemps pledges to support the “Made in France“ craftsmanship. Every year, creativity, ideas and industries from France are highlighted and celebrated. In 2021, it became the first department store to dedicate a floor to vintage and pre-loved fashion, circular fashion, repair, alteration or upcycling. Printemps also launched its responsible label, Unis-Vers.
