Vinted Marketplace is the largest online international C2C marketplace in Europe dedicated to second-hand fashion, with a growing member base of millions registered members spanning 20+ markets in Europe and North America. With a mission to make second-hand the first choice worldwide, Vinted enables people to sell and buy second-hand clothes and lifestyle items from each other, helping give those items a second or even third life. Founded in 2008 in Lithuania, Vinted is still headquartered in Vilnius, with offices in Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg, Kaunas and Paris and over 2,000 employees. It is backed by six leading venture capital firms: Accel, Burda Principal Investments, EQT Growth, Insight Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Sprints Capital.
Vinted was co-founded in 2008 by Milda Mitkutė and Justas Janauskas in Vilnius, Lithuania. The idea originated when Mitkutė sought a way to sell her surplus clothes, leading to the creation of a website where users could trade their clothing items. In 2012, Vinted expanded its reach by launching a mobile application in partnership with Lemon Labs, a Lithuanian-based app development consultancy. This move significantly enhanced user engagement and accessibility.
A pivotal moment in Vinted’s growth occurred in 2016 when Dutch businessman Thomas Plantenga joined as a strategy consultant and later became the CEO in 2017. Under his leadership, the company underwent significant restructuring, including layoffs and centralising operations in Vilnius, which contributed to its revitalisation. In 2019, Vinted achieved a significant milestone by becoming Lithuania’s first tech unicorn, raising €128 million at a €1 billion valuation in a funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners.
The company’s expansion continued with strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of Dutch competitor United Wardrobe in 2020 and Danish marketplace Trendsales in 2024. These acquisitions broadened Vinted’s market presence and user base.
Vinted’s vision is to make secondhand fashion the first choice for everyone. The company aims to demonstrate that quality items should live long, promoting a circular economy where pre-loved clothing is valued and reused. Under the leadership of CEO Thomas Plantenga, Vinted aspires to become the “Amazon of secondhand,” offering a comprehensive platform where users can access a wide range of pre-owned goods, thereby transforming consumer habits towards more sustainable choices.
Vinted’s mission is to empower individuals to buy, sell, and swap secondhand clothing and accessories, fostering a sustainable and inclusive fashion community. The company believes that everyone deserves access to affordable and stylish clothing while also reducing the environmental impact of the fashion industry. By providing a platform that encourages the reuse of fashion items, Vinted aims to reshape the fashion industry, making secondhand shopping a mainstream and desirable option for consumers worldwide.
Vinted’s platform offers a diverse range of secondhand items, including clothing, shoes, accessories, homeware, electronics, and beauty products. Users can list their pre-loved items for sale, providing detailed descriptions and photographs to attract potential buyers. The company has also ventured into the luxury segment, hosting pop-up events like the ‘House of Vinted’ in London, showcasing high-end pre-loved items. Additionally, Vinted has acquired companies such as Rebelle, a German secondhand luxury fashion platform, to enhance its offerings in the luxury market.
Vinted’s innovative marketing campaigns have garnered industry recognition. Notably, the ‘Second-hand Showdown’ campaign, a collaboration with Channel 4 and Mindshare, won the Fashion & Beauty category at the Campaign Media Awards in 2025. The company’s commitment to sustainability and its user-centric approach have also contributed to its growing reputation as a leader in the secondhand fashion industry.
