Five Autumn/Winter 2026 Colour Trends to Refresh Your Wardrobe
23 Oct 2026

From Black Cherry and Midnight Blue to Chocolate Brown, Dark Khaki and Greige, fashion experts at Accessorize reveal five versatile shades bringing fresh alternatives to classic black wardrobes for AW26.
Black may be a wardrobe staple, but Autumn/Winter 2026 is introducing a richer palette of colours that offer the same versatility with a fresh seasonal feel. From deep reds and inky blues to warm browns and understated neutrals, this year's colour trends are encouraging shoppers to experiment beyond traditional black accessories.
According to British fashion accessories retailer Accessorize, searches for cherry-red handbags have reportedly increased by more than 5,000% over the past month, reflecting growing interest in statement shades. The retailer has identified five colours to watch for the remainder of 2026, with a focus on pieces that can be incorporated into existing wardrobes.
Rebecca Riberyro, Buying and Design Director at Accessorize, explains that versatility remains central to this season's trends. Rather than investing in colours that may quickly fall out of fashion, shoppers are looking for shades that complement everyday outfits while adding personality.
1. Black Cherry: A Richer Alternative to Burgundy
Black Cherry is emerging as one of the standout colours for AW26, offering a deeper and more sophisticated interpretation of the red trend. Sitting between classic red and burgundy, the shade brings warmth and depth to winter accessories without appearing overly bright.
Black Cherry is a really wearable way to embrace the red trend this winter. It has the impact of a statement colour, but the depth makes it surprisingly easy to style and gives it the longevity of a classic,
says Riberyro.
The shade pairs particularly well with camel, cream, grey, chocolate brown and black, making it suitable for handbags, coats and other statement pieces. Its darker undertones allow shoppers to introduce colour while maintaining the versatility of a traditional winter wardrobe.
2. Midnight Blue: The New Alternative to Black
Midnight Blue is another shade gaining attention this season, offering the sophistication of black with a subtle difference. Its deep, inky appearance makes it easy to incorporate into both casual and more polished outfits.
Midnight Blue is one of those shades that can almost function as a neutral, and could be the sleeper shade of AW26. It has all the versatility we love about black, but feels a little more unexpected, making it an easy choice for anyone wanting to move away from traditional neutrals,
Riberyro explains.
A Midnight Blue handbag or coat can be styled with tonal navy and denim for a monochromatic look, while lighter shades such as cream, grey and camel provide contrast. For those looking to move beyond all-black outfits, the colour offers a practical alternative without requiring a significant wardrobe change.
3. Chocolate Brown: A Winter Wardrobe Staple
Chocolate Brown continues to strengthen its position as a wardrobe essential rather than a temporary seasonal trend. From deep espresso tones to warmer chocolate shades, the colour adds softness and richness to autumn/winter dressing.
Chocolate brown has become a real wardrobe staple rather than simply a seasonal trend. Its warmth makes it particularly strong for winter, and it works beautifully with everything from cream and camel to denim and black,
says Riberyro.
The shade complements suede textures, caramel tones and gold-toned hardware, making it particularly attractive for handbags and accessories. A Chocolate Brown handbag or chunky knit can also provide a softer alternative to black while remaining suitable for everyday styling.
4. Dark Khaki: A Fresh Take on Everyday Neutrals
Traditionally associated with utility clothing, Dark Khaki is gaining renewed interest for Autumn/Winter 2026. Deeper olive and moss tones offer a more understated approach to colour, making the shade suitable for shoppers who prefer subtle additions to their wardrobes.
Khaki is an interesting choice because it sits somewhere between a neutral and a colour. Deeper olive tones feel particularly fresh for AW26 and are an easy way to add personality without committing to something too bold,
Riberyro explains.
Dark Khaki works well with cream, beige, black, denim and brown, allowing it to fit naturally into a capsule wardrobe. Its versatility makes it a practical option for outerwear, handbags and everyday accessories.
5. Greige: The Understated Neutral of AW26
Greige, a combination of grey and beige, offers a softer approach to winter dressing. The muted shade provides the versatility of a classic neutral while creating a warmer, more considered appearance.
Greige is an incredibly versatile colour for this year's autumn/winter, and is having a quiet moment in accessories. It gives you the versatility of a neutral but can make an outfit feel instantly more considered than an all-black look,
says Riberyro.
A soft greige overcoat can add contrast to an all-black outfit, while accessories in the shade complement navy, burgundy, brown and winter whites. Its understated character also makes it an appealing choice for shoppers seeking pieces that can be worn across multiple seasons.
Is Black Finally Being Replaced?
Despite the growing popularity of richer colours, black remains an important part of autumn/winter fashion. Accessorize suggests that the AW26 palette is less about replacing black entirely and more about providing shoppers with versatile alternatives.
Black isn't going anywhere, but shoppers are becoming much more confident with colour. The exciting thing about AW26 is that shades like Black Cherry, Midnight Blue and Chocolate Brown can offer the same versatility, so there's less of a reason to always default to black,
says Riberyro.
The five shades offer different ways to introduce colour into existing wardrobes, whether through a statement handbag, a winter coat or everyday accessories. Deep reds and blues provide a more noticeable change, while Chocolate Brown, Dark Khaki and Greige offer understated alternatives.
Riberyro recommends choosing colours that can be styled in several different ways before investing in new pieces.
When choosing items for your wardrobe, I'd look for a colour you can see yourself wearing at least three ways. The most successful shades this season are the ones that feel distinctive enough to be fashionable, but versatile enough to become part of your everyday wardrobe. The key to wearing colour is the combination it's worn in.
