HOOK

Now, more than ever, it’s important for fashion brands and consumers to think sustainably if we want to look after our planet and people. Thankfully, many fashion designers and brands are paying more attention to the climate crisis and integrating ethical and sustainable processes. Of course, living sustainably just begins from the fashion labels we purchase from. Whether it’s embracing the rental market or pre-loved fashion, there are several steps we can take toward conscious consumerism. PS caring for our purchases is also key to making sure they last as long as possible. Let’s take a look at the top hundred sustainable fashion brands worldwide —:

Patagonia

Patagonia, founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, is an outdoor apparel brand recognised for its commitment to environmental sustainability, ethical practices and high-performance gear. Patagonia advocates for environmental protection through initiatives like the “1% for the Planet” program and by supporting grassroots organisations. Its innovative and durable products appeal to outdoor enthusiasts while reflecting its mission to implement solutions towards the climate crisis.

“I started as a craftsman, making climbing gear for my friends and myself, then got into apparel,” says founder Yvon Chouinard on the official website. “As we began to witness the extent of global warming and ecological destruction, and our own contribution to it, Patagonia committed to using our company to change the way business was done… The funding will come from Patagonia: Each year, the money we make after reinvesting in the business will be distributed as a dividend to help fight the crisis.”

Reformation

Reformation was founded in 2009 by former model Yael Aflalo, with the vision of creating a fashion brand that combined high-fashion aesthetics with a commitment to sustainability. Originally operating out of a small store in LA, the brand began by repurposing vintage apparel into contemporary styles. This approach reflected its focus on reducing waste, a principle that would become central to its identity.

By 2012, Reformation had grown significantly, opening its first official factory in downtown Los Angeles. This allowed the brand to oversee every aspect of production, ensuring that its commitment to sustainability and ethical labour practices was maintained. In 2015, Reformation launched its signature RefScale tool, which quantifies the environmental impact of each garment, including water, waste, and carbon dioxide savings.

As Reformation’s popularity surged, it introduced innovative materials to its collections, such as TENCEL™ Lyocell, recycled fabrics, and organic cotton. The brand has also adopted renewable energy sources in its facilities and embraced carbon-offset initiatives to minimise its environmental footprint. Today, Reformation stands as a leader in sustainable fashion, demonstrating that style and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. It continues to innovate with new initiatives, such as circular fashion programs and partnerships with eco-conscious brands.

People Tree

In 1991, British author Safia Minney created an environmental campaigning voluntary group, Global Village, in Japan which focused on sustainable living. The team designed and sold Fair Trade products at festivals in Japan and soon started to get requests from stockists. The start-up was tough as Safia invested in labour-intensive processes, dealt with disadvantaged artisans in remote corners of Bangladesh, business costs were huge and the apparel was dyed using low-impact dyes. The handcrafted apparel made with ethical production processes was sustainable and provided rural artisans with a source of income.

In 1995 Fair Trade Company was formed as a limited company by transferring the fair trading activity to a new company named People Tree. The company began as a catalogue of handwoven natural dyed apparel made with cotton, Tencel Lyocell and responsible wool, using hand weaving, hand knitting, hand embroidery and hand block printing, by women in Bangladesh.

In 1996 the ethical fashion brand became a member of World Fair Trade Organisation, the first flagship store opened in Tokyo in 1998 and the following year, People Tree expanded to England with Co-operative Group. Safia worked with several designers and influencers such as Emma Watson, Dame Zandra Rhodes and Bora Aksu. Today People Tree has World Fair Trade Organisation guaranteed status, is GOTS certified and a licensee of Fair-trade foundation. In 2015, Safia Minney left the business. Coryn V. Ferguson, took on the role of CEO in 2019.

Nudie Jeans

Nudie Jeans offer organic denim products and promotes a repair-and-reuse culture through its “Repair Shops.” Nudie Jeans kicked off in Gothenburg in 2001, fueled by a love for denim and punk music. From day one, founders Maria Erixon Levin and Joakim Levin built Nudie Jeans on sustainability and human rights at the core. Beyond fair wages, organic cotton, and transparency, they wanted to create a community that cares.

Nudie Jeans began repairing jeans in 2007 because each pair is meant to be “forever jeans”—the kind you repair, not replace. Today, Nudie Jeans Repair Shops are places to get your jeans fixed (for free), resold, or donated to Nudie Jeans’ recycling program—all to create vintage, not garbage.

MUD Jeans

Dutch sustainable brand MUD Jeans focuses on circular fashion with a rental and recycling program for denim, without sacrificing style and fit. Founded by Bert van Son in 2013 with the vision of transforming the denim industry into a more sustainable and circular model, the brand’s origins stem from a recognition of the environmental impact of denim production, which involves water wastage, chemicals, and labour exploitation. Bert aimed to change this narrative by introducing a rental system for denim, instead of purchasing them.

Sustainability is at the core of MUD Jeans’ philosophy. The company employs eco-friendly practices, such as using organic cotton and recycled materials to minimise resource extraction and waste. Additionally, MUD Jeans implements a take-back program, inviting customers to return their old jeans for recycling when they are no longer wearable. This initiative helps reduce landfill waste and promotes the circular economy model.

Sezane

French online retailer Sézane was founded in 2013 by Morgane Sézalory, selling womenswear, accessories and luxury items. The story of Sézane began with a forgotten suitcase and a love of vintage. Upon discovering an abandoned collection of vintage clothing, Morgane Sézalory made slight adjustments to the pieces and sold her finds online under the name ‘Les Composantes’. Her monthly drops became an anticipated event in France; by 2013, Morgane began supplementing her vintage pieces with her own designs and Sézane was born.

In 2015 the brand opened its first boutique in Paris before opening boutiques in London, New York and other parts of the world. Per Glossy: “In 2015 U.S. investment fund Summit Partners bought a minority stake in the company of around 20 per cent. Three years later another 20 per cent was bought by private equity giant General Atlantic which now reportedly owns 45 per cent of the company.”

Sézane dropped a collaboration with Sephora in 2020 and launched a line of personal care products made with 99 per cent ingredients of natural origin. In September 2022 investment holding company owned by the Bettencourt-Meyers family, a subsidiary of Téthys, the majority shareholder of the L’Oréal, acquiring a minority stake in the fashion label, made headlines. Today Sézane is B Corp certified. From the choice of production and raw materials to its environmental footprint and engagement in the community.

Navy Grey

Navy Grey has an interesting story. The founder spent 20 years trying to find a jumper that felt that good, and it’s what inspired her to create a brand that focused on soft natural, locally-grown wool from farms in England, Scotland and Wales, beautiful stitching, simple modern shapes, a dependable colour palette and an ability to make her feel comfortable and confident.

Being someone whose general life uniform is a pair of jeans and a jumper, Rachel was frustrated how hard it was to find knits like that one her mum and she treasured. They all fell short somewhere – their sustainability credentials, their comfort, their longevity. She searched for twenty years and eventually launched her own knitwear brand and named it Navygrey – the colours that provide firm foundations and easy effortlessness.

Freya Lillie

At Freya Lillie the team strives to deliver products of the highest quality, whilst minimising their impact on the environment. Sustainability is defined as having respect for people and the planet; without this respect, the next generation will be in short supply of resources.

Freya Lillie apparel is made from natural, sustainable fabrics like Linen and Organic Cotton. Kidswear is often viewed as wasteful since kids grow fast. At Freya Lillie the team extends the product lifecycle of their garments — the pieces are seasonless and cut slightly oversized.

Freya Lillie clothing is made to the highest quality and it is designed to be passed down. The action of passing on clothes, generation to generation, aligns with the circular economy which aims to keep our belongings in use for longer, rather than being used a few times and thrown away. The team believes that their gender neutral, classic styles are the way forward in minimising waste and disposability in the fashion industry.

Like most expecting mothers experience, Janina had a hard time shopping for maternity wear. Simple and inferior materials were used for most of the maternity wear available in the market due to the fact that the clothes were worn only when pregnant. As a pregnant woman herself, Janina felt restricted in her individuality. She didn’t want to adapt her style and let go of that part of herself. That’s when Nove was born.
