SUMMARY

Coperni is a Parisian ready-to-wear and accessories brand designed by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, established in 2013. Renowned for its innovative and minimalist aesthetic, the luxury fashion brand received attention for its futuristic designs and a focus on technological integration in fashion. With a commitment to sustainability and modern design, Coperni has established itself as a leading brand in Parisian fashion, particularly in couture, ready-to-wear  and avant-garde accessories.

HISTORY

Coperni was established in 2013 in Paris by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, alumni of the prestigious fashion school, École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Sébastien grew up in the South of France and attended a military school while Arnaud grew up in Sanary-sur-Mer, in a family of doctors. The duo met at their Parisian fashion school where Sébastien studied Fashion Design and Pattern Making while Arnaud was into Fashion Business and Management. After five years at Balenciaga and Chanel for Arnaud, and many design projects for Sébastien, they fulfilled their dream by launching their own brand.

Experience in the studios of Balenciaga and Chanel infuses a thorough knowledge of embroidery techniques in their work, streamlined with a linear sensibility that marries exhaustive origami-like technique with a sportif silhouette. The luxury fashion brand initially focused on women’s ready-to-wear, showcasing contemporary design. The duo’s aim was to create pieces that were not just fashion statements but also practical, appealing to a growing demographic of modern women balancing personal and professional lives.

Interestingly, the name Coperni invokes the life work of Renaissance-era astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, whose mathematical and astronomical research into Heliocentrism inspires the designers’ visual world. Copernicus is considered as one of the greatest genius of his time, thanks to his theory of the motion of Earth and the planets.

The brand gained significant recognition with its Spring Summer 2019 collection, which was recognised for its use of digital printing technology, showcasing vibrant patterns and innovative silhouettes. A pivotal moment came in 2021 when Coperni presented its Spring Summer collection featuring a groundbreaking runway show where a model was sprayed with a biodegradable polymer to create a dress in real-time. This showcase of cutting-edge technology solidified Coperni’s status as a leader in fashion innovation.

Collaboration has been central to Coperni’s evolution. The luxury brand has partnered with several figures within the fashion and art industries, including a collection with supermodel Bella Hadid. This collaboration featured unique designs that played on the themes of abstraction and expression, embodying the spirit of youthful creativity that Coperni champions.

In addition to its artistic collaborations, Coperni has embraced sustainable practices as part of its core ethos. The brand has implemented several initiatives aimed at eco-friendly production processes and material sourcing, marrying luxury with responsibility. This commitment was reinforced when Coperni launched a capsule collection exclusively made from recycled materials.

A significant milestone came in 2022, when Coperni was acquired by the luxury conglomerate, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. This acquisition further enhance the luxury brand’s growth trajectory and expanded its global presence while maintaining its innovative spirit. The investment allowed for greater resource accessibility and helped solidify Coperni’s position within the high-fashion ecosystem.

Coperni is deeply engaged with contemporary societal issues, frequently utilising its platform to advocate for inclusivity and diversity within the fashion industry. The brand has become a part of fruitful conversations surrounding body positivity and representation in fashion. As it continues to grow, Coperni remains focused on pushing the boundaries of fashion, nurturing young talent, and exploring new technologies.
