While this project is inspired by founder Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s own skincare routine, it’s named in honour of his Samoan grandfather, the High Chief Peter Maivia, who taught him the power of personal presentation. It’s those skincare and personal grooming lessons that helped inform the extensive men’s care line, which took Johnson and his team three years to develop. “His nickname for me, was “Tui”. And “Papa,” which translates to “Rock” in Samoan, also comes from my most important and protected role, which is father to my three daughters. I wanted to honour these anchors in my life. Thus, Papatui,” said Dwayne at the launch.
Papatui was launched in early 2024 by Dwayne Johnson, inspired by his Polynesian heritage and the need for a dedicated men’s skincare line that prioritises efficiency and results. The brand’s name reflects Johnson’s cultural roots and personal philosophy of self-care and discipline.
“In the mornings, and at night, and after workouts, I’ve become obsessed with it. Much like we are cold plunging, hitting the sauna, and going cold plunge, sauna, cold plunge, sauna, and training however we’re training. Whatever sweat equity that you’re putting in, the grooming part is just as essential. It’s the final thing,” Dwayne tells Men’s Health.
The launch of Papatui was accompanied by a strategic partnership with Target, securing exclusive distribution rights across the United States. This collaboration ensured the brand reached a broad audience with the convenience of in-store and online availability. “Together with industry experts, we committed to create products that work and deliver the quality and value that all hardworking men deserve. Now all my men out there can trade-up to high-end products without having to pay high-end prices. I believe these products will help men take better care,” says Dwayne.
One of the key factors behind Papatui’s rapid success was its scientifically formulated products, developed in collaboration with dermatologists and skincare experts.
